Hip Pain Treatment?

The hip is a large region, and different people mean different things when they say, “hip pain”.  In medicine we distinguish hip joint pain, from pain in the hip region, meaning the buttock, or side of the hip.  Some people say hip when they mean the low back. Do you have hip and knee pain?

Pain in the hip joint is usually felt in the front groin area.  It is not as common as pain in the buttock or side of the hip.  When the hip joint is the cause of pain, then the range of motion of the hip is also usually limited.  This can be determined on examination.  X-rays or an MRI scan can usually, readily determine if you have hip joint pain.

Pain of the hip that is not in the groin region is usually referred from low back pathology, e.g. disc collapse and degeneration, bulging and herniated discs, stenosis, spondylolisthesis and more.

The most effective treatment for hip joint pain, short of a hip replacement, is usually mild exercise to tolerance.  I also suggest a trial of MSM, i.e. methylsulfonomethane.  This is a sulfer containing supplement that can provide cartilage regeneration precursors.  I have personally taken this supplement for years with benefits.

As for the remaining pathologies of the low back, which I noted, above, these are usually best treated with spinal decompression treatment.  There are exceptions, e.g. grade 2 spondylolistheses and severe spinal stenosis, which are usually surgical indications. And given my clinical experience in orthopedics and neurosurgery, if you need surgery, I’ll refer to the best surgeons in Atlanta.

Given my clinical experience, I can provide you with a surgical opinion.  And if you don’t need surgery, I provide the most effective, non-surgical treatment for such problems.
